Offering an Outstanding Offshore Light Experience

DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society

Celebrating 25 Years

The DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society (DRLPS) has worked diligently since 1998 to restore and preserve the DeTour Reef Light located one mile offshore in northern Lake Huron at the far eastern end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula between DeTour Village and Drummond Island.

Built in 1931, the 83-foot tall lighthouse is a strategic and historic landmark that marks a dangerous reef to help guide ship traffic from and to Lake Huron and Lake Superior via the strategic St. Marys River.  The DRLPS completed major restoration of the structure in 2004.  An overnight keeper program and public tours to this unique Light began in 2005.

Be a Light Keeper
Tour the Light

In your time on the Light, you will get to see it all, and photograph it all, while walking in the footsteps of the original light keepers. Visiting the DeTour Reef Light is a unique experience and is a testament both to the importance of shipping in the region and the nation’s political, economic and social history. The Light is also valued for its architectural beauty and esthetic value as a landmark of the area.

Sitting on an offshore underwater reef the DeTour Reef Light boasts a working 1956 F2T foghorn, furnishings similar to when the light was a manned station, and a scale model crib demonstrating the underwater base that the DeTour Reef Light rests on. We hope you enjoy your time on the Light as much we will enjoy sharing this this adventure with you.
